Day 2 - Not an easy day.
Where do I even begin?
I don’t know if I have the words yet. And I don’t know if I ever will. But I will try.

I walked through the streets passing by the Nana Plaza this morning, taking in all the smiles of the passerbyers. Taking in all the noise, the chaos, and the seemingly normal hustle. Yes, it all looks and feels different to what I’m used to. It is a totally different culture and country. But overall things seemed ok. Sane. Fair. Even safe. But three hours later, when we walked out of our sex trafficking orientation and educational session, everything looked different. Now, as I walked down that same street, my eyes noticed things I did not see before. And what I saw made me feel nauseated to my very core...

Day 4
Elephants

Today we got up close and personal with some magestic and gentle elephants in an ethical elephant sanctuary and rehab center. We fed them, played with them and bathed them. It was a bucket list kind of day for many of us. Some women, real animal lovers, were emotional and really connected to these beautiful animals. I kept repeating this line in my head: “ma rabu ma’asecha Hashem!” “How great and awesome are your creations, G-d!”

Day 5
Shabbat in Chiang Mai

Leading up to this trip many people asked me why I am taking a trip to Thailand. “What’s Jewish about Thailand!?” they would ask. “It’s not like there is any Jewish history there”. True.
It’s a good question.
And before the trip I wasn’t so sure how to answer it. Tikkun olam, I’d say. Social justice. Volunteerism. Making a difference... those were all good answers and good reasons to do this trip. I was confident there would be a good outcome, I just wasn’t sure exactly what it would be.
