Shimshon ben Pesach Ostropoli, a Polish rabbi from Ostropol, met his tragic end on July 15, 1648, at the hands of Ukrainian assailants during the Khmelnytsky Uprising in Polonnoye, Volhynia.

During the siege of Polonnoye by the Cossacks, Rabbi Shimshon, accompanied by three hundred followers draped in their talleisim, gathered in the synagogue to pray. Tragically, they were mercilessly slaughtered by the Ukrainian attackers.

Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli was a distinguished Kabbalist known for his commentary on the kabbalistic works Ḳarnayim and the Zohar. His most renowned work, the Erev Pesach Letter titled 'Maamar Sod Eztba Elokim' (The Secret of The Finger of God), delves into the ten plagues of Egypt, promising blessings of success and protection to those who study it.

Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli wrote, "Those who engage with this text are assured protection from accidents, disasters, or untimely deaths throughout the year, with all their endeavors destined for success."
